Usually yes — but the cracks have to be repaired first, and some floors are too far gone. Here's how to tell which one you have.
Thin hairline shrinkage cracks are normal in virtually every concrete slab, especially in Utah where big temperature swings stress concrete from day one. They're stable, don't offset vertically, and repair easily. The vast majority of garage cracks are this kind.
Those straight saw-cut lines are intentional weak points where the slab is supposed to crack. They get filled with flexible polyurea so they can still move microscopically — then coated over like the rest of the floor.
Wider than ~1/4 inch, one side higher than the other, still growing, or tied to settling soil — these signal movement, not shrinkage. Coating over an actively moving crack is painting over a problem: the crack will telegraph through within a season or two.
Utah's freeze–thaw and road salt pop the concrete surface, leaving flaked and pitted areas. Scattered spalls patch fine. Widespread, deep spalling across most of the slab is a different conversation (see below).

For a typical Salt Lake Valley 2-car garage, minor crack filling — a dozen hairline cracks routed and filled — is usually included in a professional quote, not line-itemed. It becomes a line item when the work is substantial: heavy spall patching, large deteriorated areas rebuilt with epoxy mortar, or oil remediation. As a rough sense, extensive prep and repair can add $300–$800+ to a job, and on badly deteriorated older slabs (think 1960s–70s concrete in Murray or Taylorsville) it can exceed that.
How it's quoted tells you plenty. A quote that says "includes surface prep" with no detail is a quote you can't compare. A quote that says "diamond grind, route and fill ~40 linear feet of cracking with polyurea filler, patch 12 sq ft of spalling with epoxy mortar, moisture test" is a quote from someone who actually looked at your slab. Always get the repair scope in writing — verbal "yeah, we'll take care of the cracks" has a way of evaporating on install day.
Minor crack filling happens inside the normal Day 1 prep — no extra days. Moderate patching (grinding out spalls, troweling epoxy mortar, letting it cure) typically adds a half day. Major remediation — widespread patching that needs to cure before grinding, or moisture mitigation primer — can add a full day or more. Your installer should fold this into the schedule upfront rather than discovering it mid-job; see the installation timeline guide. A contractor who promises a firm one-day install on a visibly cracked 40-year-old slab is either not repairing the cracks or not telling you the truth about the schedule.
An honest installer will occasionally tell you not to coat. Listen to them. Red flags:
In these cases the right answers are, in escalating order: targeted concrete repair, a bonded concrete overlay, or full slab replacement — then coat the sound surface. A contractor who'll happily coat a heaving slab is telling you everything about their warranty.
Epoxy coating can't — it's too thin and cracks will telegraph straight through it. But cracks get repaired before coating: routed out, filled with epoxy or polyurea filler, and ground flush. The coating then goes over a sound surface.
Minor crack filling is often included in a professional quote. Extensive repair — widespread spalling, deep pits, large patched areas — can add a few hundred dollars. It should always be itemized, not vague.
Only after the old paint or sealer is completely removed — usually by diamond grinding. Coating over old paint means bonding to paint, not concrete, and you'll inherit whatever adhesion problems the paint already had.
Surface oil gets degreased; deep-soaked spots get ground out. Oil that's penetrated inches into the slab can block adhesion even after cleaning — a good installer will tell you honestly if a section needs extra remediation or can't be warrantied the same way.
Warning signs: wider than about 1/4 inch, one side higher than the other (vertical displacement), cracks that keep growing, or patterns radiating from a settled area. Cosmetic shrinkage cracks are thin, stable, and don't offset. When in doubt, a structural evaluation beats a coating quote.
Light to moderate spalling gets patched with epoxy mortar and coated over successfully. Severe, widespread spalling — where the surface is crumbling across large areas — usually means the slab needs resurfacing or replacement first.
